Projects

UB AIAA participates in three major projects during the year.  You can be a part of as many as you wish.

Design Build Fly

Project Page:
Design-Build-Fly

Captain: Josh Weisberger <joshua.weisberger@ubaiaa.org>
Co-Captain: John McGreevy <john.mcgreevy@ubaiaa.org>

This is our biggest project.  Every year AIAA, Cessna, and Raytheon Missile Systems sponsor this competition.  It involves designing, building, and flying a remote controlled fixed-wing aircraft (airplane).  The missions and constraints on the aircraft are different every year.  At the end of the year, the most active members are invited to attend the competition in Wichita, KS, all paid for by the club.

UB AIAA also has an RC aircraft simulator (RealFlight) and RC airplanes.  Both are specifically used for teaching new students to fly for themselves.

Microgravity Experiment

Project Page:  Microgravity

Co-Captain: Andrew Ring <andrew.ring@ubaiaa.org>
Co-Captain: Tom Guile <thomas.guile@ubaiaa.org>

This project hits the ground running early September.  NASA's Reduced Gravity Student Flight Opportunities Program (Microgravity) involves designing an experiment we would like to test in a simulated zero-gravity environment (microgravity).  Once we design our experiment, we write a proposal to NASA explaining what we want to do.  After NASA signs off on our experiment, we build it.  The year finishes off with us taking our experiment down to Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX and running our experiment on a modified aircraft that flies parabolas, inducing microgravity (Vomit Comet).

Bot Wars Competition

Project Page:  Bot Wars

Captain: Matt Lang <matthew.lang@ubaiaa.org>

Every year, the Student Association hosts Engineering Week.  Each engineering club at UB hosts an event.  The final event is Bot Wars.  Each club builds their own Battle Bot and competes against the others tournament style.
